I explored numerous areas in Teton Canyon, trying to burst out of the trees to get a view. Since I was painting for a plein air competition, I carried some extra equipment and didn't want to go more than about a half mile, so the deep woods (and mosquitos) were challenging. Finally, I found this wonderful open field with a view of Treasure Mountain. I love painting cliffs and I was excited to explore the new colors. Sitting a stone's throw from the Jedediah Smith Wilderness, and being alone for such a long time in deep concentration, the possibility of grizzly bears also added a level of adventure to painting en plein air! (I admit to yelling "Hey Bear!" periodically, as I was taught in Alaska.) Alas, after a few hours, only rain threatened and I had to retreat once again to my van, where I was in and out the rest of the day completing the painting from memory!
